Hormones play a pivotal role in the female reproduction. The measurement of Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH) and Luteinising Hormone (LH) in blood serum is important and one of the most common tests for the control of ovarian function and fertility status.
FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) is released by the pituitary gland. Stimulates the growth of follicles and has a role in the maturation of oocytes. The measurement of FSH levels in the blood is one of the most widely used tests to assess a woman’s ovarian function and fertility.
Follicle-Stimulating Hormone stimulates estrogen production, which, in turn, jolts follicular growth. The follicle is the sac in which the egg matures until it is released into the fallopian tube.
High FSH in females indicates low ovarian reserve, and women with high FSH have significantly lower pregnancy chances than women with normal FSH levels. A woman’s ovarian reserve is becoming depleted and no longer producing eggs at all, or producing very few, lower-quality eggs.
Anything above 14 is considered “abnormal.” On average, patients in the 10-to-14 range, have a 50% lower success rate of bringing home a baby than others in their age group with FSH levels of 9.5 or below.
Luteinizing hormone (LH) is produced by gonadotropic cells in the anterior pituitary gland. Women who have high levels of luteinizing hormone may experience infertility, because the hormone directly impacts the reproductive system.
